It’s “Food Waste Friday” and I’ll be linking up my food waste today at The Frugal Girl.

Food waste wastes money.  So I try not to waste food if I don’t have to.  However, the quality of the food that I eat is also important to me.  If it doesn’t taste good, I won’t force myself to eat it.

Below is my food waste for the week:

Recognize it?  It is some chicken noodle soup.  CANNED chicken noodle soup.  Normally I make my own noodle soup as I use chicken stock that I make myself plus, often, homemade egg noodles.  YUM!  But one day I was feeling lazy, craving noodle soup, and had a can of noodle soup in the pantry so I decided I might as well use it.  BOY WAS THAT A MISTAKE!  After eating my homemade soup for so long, I just couldn’t stomach the taste of this canned soup.  The broth tasted very salty and the noodles were mushy, slimy and tasteless.  I finished my serving (after all, I needed something to dip the grilled cheese sandwich into – haha!), but tossed the 2nd serving rather than save it for another day.

Wasteful… yep!  But in this case I don’t care.  I see no point in consuming large amounts of sodium if it doesn’t at least taste good to me.

How did you do on food waste this week?

I’m with you on this waste. Don’t eat something unhealthy unless it’s something you’re really enjoying.

However, now that you have discovered you just don’t like canned soups (and most likely other salty packaged foods), why don’t you go through your cupboards and donate it to your local food bank. It’s better than letting it sit in your cupboard until it expires, or being opened and only part of it eaten. (Many food banks will take food up to 6 months after its expiration date).

That’s a great suggestion, Jenny. I actually donate to the food bank quite often as my employer does regular food drives. I will put the rest of the canned noodle soup in the donation pile next time we have a food drive!

Oh yes! I won’t force myself to eat things I don’t like either. Great suggestion to donate to the food pantry. I’ve lots of things I ended up not wanting there. :-)

Canned soups are very salty and the noodles are mushy. However, when I recovering from stomach flu that’s just what I want. Other times, I agree with you. BTW, I like to dip my grilled cheese in tomato soup.

I had a small amount of soup that I had to throw away also :( I figure it could have been worse though!
